A2 and AS Level Study

At Rastrick Tutorial and International College we offer a broad range of subjects from GCSE to AS and A2 level. Download our course matrix which indicates which subjects are offered at which level.

A personal learning programme is given during your interview together with advice on which subjects to follow. At this level it is possible to combine this with extra GCSE subjects as upgrades or re-sits.

The minimum lesson time required for each A-level subject is four hours a week. For students taking science A-levels there will need to be extra time for practicals and controlled assessments. For language students there will be additional time allocated for orals. Tuition can be done during the school day, evenings, weekend or holidays.

First Time A-levels

A-level courses normally take between three and six terms to complete. Students can join the college in September or at any time of the year.

Two-Year Courses

A Level courses comprise two parts, leading to AS examinations at the end of the first year, followed by A2 examinations at the end of the second year.

Individual Tuition

Some students respond well to one on one tuition, which is available at Rastrick Tutorial College.
This encourages an active involvement in the learning process, with the student taking more direct responsibility for the development of understanding. A good output of preparation and written work is essential and students are expected to put in no less than three hours' set work and private study per one-hour tutorial in order to gain sufficient benefit from the tutorial hours.

Practicals

For science, art theatre studies, music technology and CDT an extra hours tuition is required to cover course work for these practicals. For the science examinations a practical examination is required as well as the written examination. This is one day at AS Level and one day at A2 Level.

One year A-level courses are carefully structured, in consultation with the student.

Courses normally begin in September. One-term resits may also begin in March, with examinations in June. A two-term resit, from January to June, is available, allowing more time to prepare.
